![]() Investigation of androids’ performance of humanness in the chosen films enabled interrogation of the notion of humanness itself, and revealed the social construction and performativity of humanness through emotion, relationships, society, and bodies.Ībstract A Study of the Impenetration of the Human and the Technological in Science Fiction Film: -Revisiting Blade Runner. I found that while depictions of humans and androids were complex, most often these films relied on and reinforced dominant discourses such as patriarchy, capitalism, and human exceptionalism, even when there was a deliberate attempt to challenge traditional norms. ![]() Drawing from feminist theory and theories of social constructionism, I explore themes of sexuality, gender, technology, nature, bodies, humanity, and emotion through representations of fembots in the chosen films an analysis which reveals the performativity of humanness. ![]() In this dissertation, I analyse four films: Metropolis (1927), Blade Runner (1982), Her (2013), and Ex Machina (2015). Discussions of android futures thrive in science fiction film given that films reflect societal attitudes, those that feature synthetic humans reflect meanings about humans, technology, and the world - it is these meanings I wish to investigate. The inception and actualisation of conscious humanoid robots has become a heated topic in the last few decades, inciting responses ranging from intrigue and optimism to disgust and fear.
